Safety for women travelers
Women travelers are prime targets for theft, muggings
and even worse rape. Prepare for your holiday in advance
and be aware of the dangers. Here are some tips to help
keep you safe. USE THEM!
Before setting off on your travels find
out all you can about the country, their customs, laws,
etc..
Buy a bum bag to carry your money and
documents and hide it under your clothing
Take a rubber doorstopper for your hotel. Lodge the
doorstopper from the inside, for added security.
Use disposable cameras when traveling to
high-crime countries.
Place bells or something that makes a
noise when touched on your luggage, and when someone tries
to move it, you will hear. Always, when standing around or
sitting drinking coffee, keep your foot through the strap.
If someone drops something, or something happens, look at
your backpack. This may be a diversion to steal your
backpack.
Don`t venture out after dark by yourself.
To help people help you during an
emergency in a foreign land, type (and preferably
laminate) a small card, on which you mention your age,
blood group and other relevant medical details. Most
important, a number to contact - a global cell phone or
the number of the hotel you are staying at. Carry this
with you at all times.
Luggage tags should not have your home
address on them. Instead fill in with your business
address. Or the address of your local police station.
Be aware of the usual travel safety
concerns: birth control pills or other contraceptive
devices, and feminine hygiene products. Be sure to carry
with you any other medications that are required to
maintain good health. Condoms are a necessity for
preventing sexually-transmitted diseases. A
single woman traveling in Asia should wear
a real wedding ring this will warn men that you are
married.
Try not to look like a tourist. Wear plain
clothes that won't give the impression you are carrying
money or valuables. Leave jewelry at home - including
rings and watches. Buy a cheap watch just for travel - you
only need to have the correct time while on a trip!
Avoiding eye contact with men is a good
way to prevent any problems or hassles.
In short, the single woman should never
travel alone, and should always be acutely aware of what
she is doing and the customs of the country she is
visiting. Traveling with a group of friends will be the
best way to prevent a dangerous situation.
