Rajasthan
is one of the most beautiful and colourful regions of India. Strangely
enough it has more of that Arabian Nights flavour than many Arabic
countries. The desert, the camel markets, the walled cities and the people
make this a very exciting destination to spend a few weeks.
Rajasthan covers an Area of 342 Million Sq.Kms and its in the west
border of Pakistan, however the border is not open. A large part of
Rajasthan is covered by the Thar Desert. The most common languages spoken
are Rajasthani, Hindi and Marwari. The climate is, very hot during summers,
i.e. from May to July and very cold in winters, i.e from November to
February. The best time to visit Rajasthan is between October to April. But
there is also the opportunity to visit the pleasant hill station Mt Abu and
the impressive white marble carved Mt_Abu,General.
Jaipur, the pink
city, is the first place many people visit in Rajasthan. The General is
world famous, but is far from being the only major attraction in town.
Udaipur, the white
city, is in the south of the state. The town is pretty and a nice place to
stroll around. Set in the middle of the lake Pichola, you can see the old
Maharaja Palace. You can also have a good view at it from the City Palace.
Jodhpur is a
congested town with the amazing Meherangarh fort located at the top of the
hill. The small winding alleys through the areas with blue (Brahmin) houses,
white houses and many shops and markets, leads to the amazing fort at the
top of the hill, from which you can have an excellent overview over the
city as well. The towns of
Bikaner and
Jaisalmer (the
Golden City) are located in the west, in the Thar desert. They are true
gems, you will have the impression you are back in the middle ages. And of
course, if you happen to be in Rajasthan round and about the fifteenth of
November, make sure you pay a visit to the colourful general at Pushkar
Being an important source of precious and semi precious stones,
Rajasthan is also known for its jewellery business. Nathdwara and Udaipur
are famous for their silver Kunden and Meenakari Work, Bikaner has got a
big bazaar for jewellery, Jaisalmer is famous for its old silver jewellery
and Pratapgarh in Chittaurgarh district is famous for its Thewa type of
Jewellery's.
