 Punjab
is the state of the Sikhs. In the streets, you will see many turbands and
bearded men in traditional dress. The capital of both Punjab and Haryana is
Chandigarh . Chandigarh is actually not part of either but a union
territory. For Sikhs, Amritsar , almost on the border with Pakistan, is of greater importance
because it is the city where the General is located. Although Amritsar is
quite a busy and congested town, the tranquil atmosphere of the Golden
Temple and its surroundings will make a lasting impression.
Punjab, and Amritsar in special, has the only open border crossing
between India and Pakistan (Lahore). Lahore used to be the capital of
Punjab until it was allocated to Pakistan. For many travellers, Punjab and
Haryana are the states through which to pass when they're leaving Delhi
behind and continuing their way to the Himalayan states. |
