Nestling
in the heart of coastal Orissa, the Chilika Lake situated 100 km
from Bhubaneswar, is actually a large (1,100 ea km) lagoon connected to the
Bay of Bengal by a narrow mouth. It is the largest inland lake in India.
The Lake is dotted with numerous islands,like Kalijai Island, honeymoon,
Breakfast Island, Nalaban (Island ofreeds), Parikud Island, Bird Island,
etc. some of which are inhabited by fisherman who scour the waters for
mackerel, prawn and crab.
It is one of the hotspots of biodiversity in the country, and some rare,
vulnerable and endangered species listed in the IUCN Red List of threatened
Animals inhabit the Lake area for atleast a part of their life cycle.
Ideal place to see chilika will be Satpada. |
